Alphonse Karr Bamboo or Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphonse Karr’ is a clumping bamboo. A clumping bamboo forms a tight, beautiful clump and will not run. Besides that, it is also a fast-growing bamboo variety.
The Alphonse Karr Bamboo is very easy to maintain and very colorful with its bright green leaves and its golden culms (canes) with green stripes.
Alphonse Karr can reach average heights of 20’OA. When planting, the recommended spacing should be between 8 to 10 feet, as it will grow into one another. This bamboo is one of the best, most commonly used hedge bamboo cultivated around the world. As far as privacy screens or tall hedges, the Alphonse Karr is a great choice because of the height and width they reach. The culms grow up to 1” in diameter, which is another reason why this bamboo makes a great hedge, because it is easy to trim and maintain.
The Bambusa multiplex variety works well as a focal point in a planter, or island with light trimming and maintenance. You may also want to use this bamboo in a decorative container as well.
The Alphonse Karr is one of the taller multiplex varieties, and is also drought tolerant once established and can survive in almost any condition. This Bambusa multiplex enjoys full sun to partial shade. If the clums are exposed to bright sunlight, they will have a slight magenta tint. It can withstand temperatures down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit but thrives in hot climates. This bamboo would do well from Florida’s east coast up to the Carolina Coast and along the Gulf Coast to Texas.
