CAROLINA SAPPHIRE CYPRESS

The Arizona cypress, native to the American Southwest, is a remarkable species characterized by its dense covering of blue-grey leaves and its narrow pyramid shape that can reach heights of 50 to 70 feet. Its resilience in hot, dry climates makes it an excellent choice for use as a screen, hedge, or windbreak. Each year, the tree’s outer red-brown bark peels away to reveal vibrant red inner bark that is smooth and striking. The ‘Carolina Sapphire’ cultivar stands out with some of the most brilliant blue foliage you’ll encounter. Once planted and properly irrigated, these young trees can impressively grow about 6 feet annually.
Light Requirement: full sun

The smooth-barked Arizona cypress is a marvel of nature, flourishing magnificently when bathed in full sunlight and rooted in well-drained soils, be they acidic or alkaline. This resilient tree demands the right conditions to truly thrive; excess moisture or poorly drained clay can hinder its potential by fostering a shallow root system, leaving it susceptible to the whims of the wind. Once a staple in southeastern U.S. landscapes, this species finds its true home and reaches its zenith in the arid beauty of the southwest—places like west Texas and Oklahoma offer it an environment where it can grow with unparalleled vigor and grace.
