GLOSSY PRIVET/LIGUSTRUM

We don’t know of any case where a Ligustrum would be a centerpiece. It is perfect however for ornamental, or beautification of a particular spot. As you can see in our pictures, a Ligustrum can be left with all its foliage, or it can be ‘limbed up’, providing a visual see through. This also provides a perfect opportunity to create a canopy which resembles an umbrella in shape. These trees are gorgeous. They stay dark green in color, and if pruned regularly they will create accents to your yard that no other tree can do.
The Ligustrum, known for its dense, dark green foliage, offers versatility in landscaping as it can be left untrimmed or artistically shaped. This plant is highly resilient, tolerating air pollution, wind, and poor soil conditions, making it a favored choice for street trees. Its popularity extends to landscape design where it serves effectively as a specimen plant or in borders to create barriers along driveways or between residential lots.
Our service includes delivery within the state of Florida at no additional cost (other delivery fees will be quoted at purchase), and we provide a One-Year Guarantee on every tree planted by The Tree Planters.
Commonly referred to as glossy privet, wax-leaf ligustrum, tree privet, and wax-leaf privet, this evergreen shrub or small tree can grow up to 30 feet (9.1 meters) tall. It features glossy leaves that are 4-6 inches (10.2-15.2 cm) long with an upward V-fold from the midvein. In late summer, small white flowers with a strong odor bloom in upright panicles up to 10 inches (25.4 cm) long. The fruit is an oblong blue-black drupe about 0.25 inches (0.6 cm) long that remains on the plant throughout much of the year.
Several cultivars have been developed: ‘Excelsum Supurbum’ with yellow-margined leaves; ‘Tricolor’ featuring yellow and pink variegation when young; and ‘Pyramidale’, which has a narrow conical shape.
The Ligustrum is hardy and easy to cultivate under full sun to partial shade conditions and exhibits moderate drought tolerance—requiring supplemental watering only during extended dry spells—and thrives in any well-drained soil type within USDA Zones 8 – 10.
Propagation is straightforward through softwood cuttings or seeds.
This versatile plant serves two main purposes: as an impenetrable hedge screen or as an ornamental tree best shaped into an umbrella form for creating overhead canopy effects without lower foliage obstruction.
