MAGNOLIA TREE (Southern)

As highlighted above, there are numerous cultivars of Magnolias, but our focus will be on a select few. While our inventory includes the Southern Magnolia, we encourage you to consult with us to determine which option best fits your needs. Each variety offers something special: Bracken Brown Beauty features a slightly brown underside, DD Blanchard boasts a distinctly brown backside, and Little Gem is a charming miniature Magnolia with petite leaves. The Southern Magnolia stands as the original genus from which all other Magnolias are cultivated; it grows impressively large.
Few plants embody the essence of the South quite like the Magnolia. Their grand, waxy leaves and fragrant blooms are beloved fixtures in Southern landscapes. With blossoms that span an array of colors—some gracing summer’s warmth while others herald spring’s arrival in late winter—Magnolias are cherished for their aromatic flowers and diverse forms. They present an array of foliage and bloom types that cater to every gardener’s preference; truly, there’s a Magnolia species for every garden.

The Southern Magnolia is an impressive evergreen tree with broad leaves that can soar between 60-90 feet (18-27 meters) tall and feature trunks up to 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) in diameter. Its trunk typically stands straight and erect, supporting spreading branches that form a dense pyramidal crown. The large evergreen leaves measure 5-8 inches (13-20 cm), showcasing dark glossy green tops with rusty undersides resembling velvet.
Southern Magnolias produce striking white flowers measuring 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) across; these blooms exude a delightful fragrance throughout spring and summer seasons. In autumn, they bear reddish-brown conelike fruits containing bright red seeds suspended by threads when mature.
With over 100 cultivars listed—though some may no longer be available—you’ll find options like ‘Edith Bogue,’ known for its conical shape and cold-hardiness; ‘Little Gem,’ compact at just 20 feet (6 m) tall with smaller foliage; ‘Samuel Sommer,’ boasting flowers up to 14 inches (36 cm); or ‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty,’ appreciated for its bushy form featuring smaller leaves and blossoms.
