ROYAL POINCIANA

The Royal Poinciana is truly a magnificent tree, gracing the summer landscape with its vibrant orange-red blossoms atop an umbrella-shaped canopy of delicate leaves. Its expansive reach makes it unsuitable for smaller properties and can even dominate a medium-sized yard. Ideally, it should be planted in a large open lawn without any garden beds beneath, as its shallow root system competes vigorously for water and nutrients.
These trees grow rapidly, reaching impressive heights of 40 to 50 feet and often spreading wider than they are tall. It’s important to carefully consider their placement due to their size. Thriving in tropical climates like Zone 10, poincianas begin to flower at around four or five years old.
Despite being deciduous—though our winters are mercifully brief—they produce seed pods that aren’t troublesome since germination takes years. For optimal growth and flowering, plant them in well-drained soil under full sun exposure. Their stunning blooms make an appearance from late spring through mid-summer, adding a spectacular touch to the season’s beauty.
