Hello, Joel, from The Tree Planters here. Today I want to share with you some resources that guide us in deciding what trees will best fit our customers specific needs.
There are many factors that I take into consideration. I suggest that when my customers are considering what trees to add to their landscape that they take a look at The Florida Grades and Standards for Nursery Plants. The document is offered on the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service- Division of Plant Industry website.
This document is the Holy Grail of the tree, palm and plant industry. It contains an exhaustive amount of detailed information.
A great article that helps to break down the basics into layman terms is Florida Grades and Standards: Choosing Quality Plants by Henry Meyer. Meyer has been the Commercial Urban Horticulture Extension Agent III in Miami-Dade County since 2003.
In his article he explains the 4 grades of trees, palms, shrubs and wetland plants.
- Florida Fancy (FF)
- Florida #1
- Florida #2
- Cull
Each grade has specific requirements which he explains in a very clear and understandable manner. The Florida Grades and Standards for Nursery Plants is indispensable to people within my industry but it is also a very detailed document. Luckily, Henry Meyer shared this informative article.
Over the years I have always taken pride in what I plant for my customers. I look at all the factors and provide them with the information they need to make a decision.
